Chapter Seventeen

Telis was breathing hard; his massive chest muscles were aching, burning, and the pain was equal to their greatly increased size. It was fine to give a man muscles, he reasoned, but without time to adapt to them and learn to use them, they were not that great a boon. His only solace was the knowledge that the others were likely suffering as much as he was; they might be stronger than he, but they were no more accustomed to flying, or to using pectoral muscles the size of Meglaps!

He had left them behind an hour ago, and this pleased him. He was following the roads, and had allowed himself to come lower once he knew he was out of sight of the others. The landmarks he saw below him said that he was nearing Crevas Lake, so he was planning and thinking...

He knew that, from the appearance of the transformed soldiers, he was now a hideous creature, and he could feel his great size. He'd not been a short man before, topping six feet; now he stood almost nine feet tall, and even as he flew, he had examined his body as best he could. He was amazed at the great hands that he now had, and the way his fingernails had extended into claws that reminded him of small daggers. He'd felt his tusks and fangs, and wondered if he would actually use them in a fight–though he had no doubt the Assassins would use theirs, and so, if it came to it, he do what he had to do!

His senses were enhanced, also, and he could see and hear and even smell far better than he ever had before. He imagined that his other senses, taste and touch, would be equally improved, and wondered just what he had become.

The real question in his mind, though, was what he would say to the Prince, or to whoever was in command of the rebellion. He could show them his own body, to warn them about what was coming their way, but how could he convince them that he wanted to join them? He was fairly sure he would not trust something like himself, if he were in their shoes.

He saw lights ahead, and began to descend; yes, that was Crevas Lake, the town, but what were those fires beside it? There was a great camp there, and he knew it must be the camps of the ogres and elves. Men, he suspected, would not be camping so close to ogres, not after recent events, so he guessed that they would've remained inside the town itself.

He managed to land, though he stumbled and nearly fell when he touched down; his momentum was greater than he'd suspected, and his body mass so great that he could not stop quickly, so he had to run along with his own forward motion for a few dozen feet. When he finally halted, he stood there, hands on his knees, and simply breathed for a few moments, sucking in the air his muscles were screaming for.
